In July 2020, rapper Tory Lanez allegedly shot Megan Thee Stallion after a party they were at together. According to Megan, Lanez tried to offer her money to not tell police or the world that Lanez was the person who had shot him.

Megan opened up about her experience in an April 2022 interview with Gayle King for CBS Mornings. She explained that she was ready to leave the party that she was at, while the people that she was with didn’t want to. It was a simple argument that soon turned dangerous.

Megan got out of the car, and Lanez told her to “dance” and proceeded to shoot a gun at her feet. She was left with bullets in her ankles (some pieces of which remain in her feet to this day) and immense psychological hurt, after she trusted Lanez as a close friend.

Lanez was charged in relation to the incident in October 2020, with the court issuing a protective order for Megan against him. He faces trial in September 2022.

In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Lanez felt remorseful about what he had done. Megan told her that in the moment, he even offered her money to keep quiet about what had happened.

“He’s apologizing,” she remembered the Canadian artist saying. “He said ‘I’m so sorry. Please don’t tell nobody. I’ll give y’all a million dollars if y’all don’t say nothing,’ and I’m like, ‘What are you talking about?! Why are you offering me money right now?! Help me! And if you’re sorry, just help me!”

The experience was traumatic for Megan and still affects her today

Prior to the shooting, Megan considered Lanez a good friend. She told King that they bonded over both losing their mothers, and as a result of her feeling lonely in the aftermath of that loss, she sought to make strong friendships like the one she had with him. Before he shot her, they hung out together almost every day.

“I really thought that we were all friends,” she said. “When my mom passed, I just felt like I was looking for some type of family environment, and I was letting so many people in. And I didn’t care who it was; I just wanted to feel like I got family and I got people that care about me.”

The betrayal and violent incident has led Megan to become less trusting of other people, and it’s made it harder for her to open up again and have close relationships with people around her.

“My anxiety is worse,” she said honestly. “My relationship with people, it’s gotten very cold, because I’m not as trusting as I used to be. I’ve got this wall and I don’t want to make any friends. And I’m trying to be as nice as I can to everybody. New people, I probably won’t even hold a conversation longer than 30 minutes because I feel like every time I’m talking, I’m, like, on the verge of tears and I don’t want to have to explain to strangers why I’m crying.”
