Posted by Martina Birk on Sunday, April 14, 2024

Russel Henley, hailing from the United States turned professional in 2011. He has had 7 professional wins in his career so far, out of which he got 4 on the PGA Tour and 3 on the Korn Ferry Tour. The golfer’s best career finish in a major tournament was at Augusta earlier this year where he finished in the fourth position.

The golfer is now displaying stunning skills at the 2023 Wyndham Championship in North Carolina, along with a very special member of his team, his caddie. The golfer has accorded his caddie previously for his last year’s win that ended his 5-year-long winless drought. It will be interesting to see if the golfer does the same this time as well. As we wait, let us get to know a little bit more about Henley’s Bagman!

Who is Russel Henley’s caddie?

Russell Henley currently has Andrew Sanders on the bag. Unsure of when the partnership between the two exactly started, but it sure has been fruitful. Sanders has been a caddie since 2006 and he has caddied for renowned golfers such as Jason Schultz and  Jimmy Walker. Sanders was born in 1980 in the town of Cincinnati.

Sanders was quite the golfer himself and played some college-level golf during his university days. He attended college in Houston, where he studied at the University of Houston. One of the best memories of him being a caddie goes back to 2013. He was then caddying for Jimmy Walker, and Walker won the Frys.com. Sanders describes that moment as the “culmination of a lot of hard work and determination.”

Henley lovingly refers to Andrew Sanders as Andy. After his 2022 victory at the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba, the golfer was very overwhelmed. He shared after he won that it was Andy’s motivating words toward the end that gave him the strength to keep going. His caddie asked the golfer to do whatever he was there to do and to keep fighting till the 18th hole.

Sanders once talked about what the best part about being a looper is. According to him, it is the sense of being a part of “something special”, and seeing the golfers compete at the highest level of the game.

Andrew Sanders’ best memory as a golfer

Being a collegiate golfer, Sanders was able to qualify for the 2000 US Open at the Pebble Beach Golf Links. He was just 20 at the time and getting the opportunity to play alongside some of the best golfers was an achievement.  Sanders scored 77 in the first round, and 78 in the second round of the tournament, and unfortunately failed to make the cut. It was Tiger Woods who won that year and destroyed everyone in the field.

Russell Henley’s former caddies

Before Sanders, Henley had Todd Gjesvold on the bag. Gjesvold studied at the University of Oregon from 1986 to 1988. He is currently caddying at the Pebble Beach Company. The Omak native was on the bag for Henley during his 2017 Shell Houston Open victory.

Before Gjesvold, Henley had Adam Hayes as his caddie. Hayes is presently caddying for the 2023 Augusta Champion Jon Rahm. Hayes is regarded as one of the most respected caddies on the PGA Tour. He studied at Brevard Community College and the University of Central Florida. Hayes started caddying back in 2000 on the LPGA Tour. In 2004, he made his transition from the LPGA Tour to the PGA Tour as a caddie. Hayes has been on the bag for Webb Simpson, Jason Dufner, Vaughan Taylor, and Ben Crane other than Rahm and Henley.
